Winter Activities

Winter in Mongolia is mainly known as coldest and stormy, besides being a bit sunny. In fact, some of Mongolia’s most amazing experiences happen in winter such as Ice festival, Lunar new year and one thousand camel festival. There are exciting winter activities on offer besides winter
festivals, that include Dogsled, Sky resort ski area, horse and camel riding.

Dog Sledding

Dog lovers shouldn’t miss out on exploring legendry winter adventure from the back of a dogsled. A natural trail completely filled with snow. Sled which covered with sheep skin, carried by adorable Siberian husky dogs and controlled by a musher. Your Musher will teach you how to work with the highly-trained dogs and you can discover the speed and energy with 6-8 dogs pull you. Its possible to go dogsledding in Terelj National Park on 1-2 hour intimate tour of only two people on each sled.

Skiing and Snowboarding

Surprisingly, skiing and snowboarding are not massively popular in Mongolia it’s because of there is only one ski resort named Sky Resort which is located in Ulaanbaatar. In southern part of the city, Resort has 6km slopes available and 4 lifts transport for guests at the elevation of 1596 meter above sea level. Mongolian gets mostly snow storming and not enough stays put for a stable ski season due to wind blowing.

Winter horseback Riding

Winter horseback riding is so different than summer riding because of the riding trail covers snow all over its like a magical winter wonderland. Winter horseback riding is the most common among locals. Mongolian horses have adapted well to the cold and harsh weather condition over the centuries. They have not been sought for breeding through centuries and the breed got really strong due to harsh weather conditions and rough terrain. Thus, thicker coat during winter makes
them shorter and bit fatter. We operate 1-5 hour riding tour per day with local horseman who will guide you to improve your riding skills. Local horseman welcome even non- riding guests who want to join optional day tour.

Winter camel riding

To experience Mongolian winter from the back of a camel is better to absorb atmosphere and let yourself be transport into the magical land of dunes which covered by snow all around. When you saddle up on camel back, you will enjoy with breath-taking landscape of Gobi winter.

Winter temperature of the coldest desert on the earth can reach as low as -30C*, thus two humped Bactrian camels are perfectly adapted this harsh climate with a super thick coat.
